Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth-more than ruin, more even than death. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible; thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habits; thought is anarchic and lawless, indifferent to authority, careless of the well-tried wisdom of the ages. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. It sees man, a feeble speck, surrounded by unfathomable depths of silence; yet it bears itself proudly, as unmoved as if it were lord of the universe. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man. But if thought is to become the possession of many, not the privilege of the few, we must have done with fear. It is fear that holds men back - fear lest their cherished beliefs should prove delusions, fear lest the institutions by which they live should prove harmful, fear lest they themselves should prove less worthy of respect than they have supposed themselves to be.

Gli uomini temono il pensiero più di ogni altra cosa al mondo-più della rovina e persino più della morte. Il pensiero è sovversivo e rivoluzionario, distruttivo e terribile; il pensiero è spietato nei confronti del privilegio, delle istituzioni e delle comode abitudini; il pensiero è anarchico e senza legge, indifferente verso le autorità, incurante dell'ormai collaudata saggezza dei secoli passati. Vede l'uomo, un flebile granello, circondato da insondabili profondità di silenzio; eppure si porta fiero, immobile come se fosse signore dell'universo. Il pensiero guarda nella voragine dell'inferno, ma non ha paura. Il pensiero è grande, acuto e libero, la luce del mondo, e la più grande gloria dell'uomo. Se il pensiero non è bene di molti, ma soltanto privilegio di pochi, lo dobbiamo alla paura. È la paura che limita gli uomini - paura che le loro amate credenze si rivelino delle illusioni, paura che le istituzioni con cui vivono si dimostrino dannose, paura di dimostrarsi essi stessi meno degni di rispetto di quanto avessero supposto di essere.
